Day 6 – The Lovely Lunenburg [English version below]

10:15 – Après la vidange des eaux noires et grises, nous quittons le camping « presque fermé ». Pis ça mal été, s’tie de tête d’égout d’marde dans ce camping! Mon adaptateur y est resté bloqué, juste après qu’il se soit détaché pendant la vidange… 💩💩. Visite annoncée au Canadian Tire!!
J’ai pris soin un peu plus tôt de réserver mon camping pour les deux prochains jours à Lunenburg.

« Lunenburg est certainement l’un des ports de pêche les plus pittoresques des Provinces maritimes. fondé en 1753, le village occupe un magnifique site sur les flancs escarpés d’une péninsule bordée des deux côtés par un port naturel. Avec ses bâtiments en bois, Lunenburg a des airs qui rappellent quelque peu le Vieux Continent. Le vieux Lunenburg a d’ailleurs été classé au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO en raison de son plan d’urbanisme colonial britannique. » Source: Explorez Halifax et la Nouvelle-Écosse.

12:30 – Je m’arrête à Bridgewater pour faire le plein d’essence et le plein du frigo. Et je fais le plein de mon estomac chez A&W… burger végane (Beyond meat) , frites et root beer! 😋. Mais pas trop souvent… c’est lourd et ça m’endors ensuite. Je suis qu’à quelques minutes de Lunenburg.

13:30 – Je m’arrive au bureau du camping pour faire mon enregistrement. Un jeune homme m’accueille avec le sourire – et pas un sourire de « fin-de-saison-touristique-pus-capable-de-voir-du-monde »! 😁 Je lui indique avoir une réservation de deux jours pour le lot 28.

– Oh… ok, c’est vous! Il y a eu un petit incident ce matin sur le site 28. Un monsieur a reculé avec son gros VR dans les branchements d’eau et d’électricité du site 28. Venez avec moi, je vais vous montrer et vous pourrez choisir un autre emplacement.

Il prend le temps de noter les sites disponibles. Il y a deux zones, soit le upper et le lower campground. Finalement je choisis le site 40, dans le lower, plus intime, moins de voisins, et…. cinq chevreuils sur mon site au moment où on s’approche. J’espère qu’ils reviendront demain matin.

15:30 – Après avoir installé le team, je pars à pied vers le vieux Lunenburg pour ensuite me rendre de l’autre côté de la baie à Manson Beach et ainsi photographier le port. J’ai pas une belle lumière.. .Depuis trois jours, un brouillard en altitude persiste et filtre beaucoup le soleil. Je vois à peine mon ombrage. Le ciel est très gris-blanc. En fin d’après-midi, on distingue un peu de bleu du ciel.

Lunenburg, 2 400 habitants, est un TRÈS beau village! Vraiment! Les rues sont très à pic, ce qui contribue beaucoup au côté pittoresque du village. Les rues sont propres, ça sent le printemps, la mer – et un très léger parfum de poisson flotte dans l’air. Quelques touristiques déambulent dans cette douce (et étonnante) chaleur automnale. Il y a beaucoup de boutiques et de galeries d’art. J’y ferai peut-être un tour demain.

Selon l’UNESCO – Le Vieux-Lunenburg offre le meilleur exemple encore existant d’un établissement colonial britannique aménagé en Amérique du Nord. Fondé en 1753, il conserve sa structure d’origine intacte, obéissant à un plan en damier conçu en métropole, ainsi que son aspect général. La population a su préserver l’identité de la ville au cours des siècles en sauvegardant l’architecture de bois de ses maisons et de ses édifices publics, dont certains datent du XVIII^e siècle et témoignent du maintien d’une tradition d’architecture vernaculaire. Son économie a toujours reposé sur la pêche dans l’Atlantique dont l’avenir est aujourd’hui très incertain.

Day 6 – The lovely Lunenburg

10:15 AM – After emptying the black and gray water tanks, we leave the « almost closed » campground. And that went bad, – damn shitty sewer head in this campground! My adapter got stuck there, just after it came off during the draining… 💩💩. A visit to Canadian Tire is on the agenda!!

I took care a little earlier to reserve my campground for the next two days in Lunenburg.

12:30 PM – I stop in Bridgewater to fill up with gas and stock up the fridge. And I fill up my stomach at A&W… vegan burger (Beyond Meat), fries, and root beer! 😋. But not too often… it’s heavy, and it makes me sleepy afterward. I’m only a few minutes away from Lunenburg.

1:30 PM – I arrive at the campground office to check in. A young man greets me with a smile – and not the kind of smile that says, « end-of-tourist-season-can’t-stand-seeing-people-anymore »! 😁 I inform him that I have a two-day reservation for lot 28.

– Oh… okay, it’s you! There was a little incident this morning on your site. A gentleman backed his big RV into the water and electricity hookups on site 28. Come with me, I’ll show you, and you can choose another site.

He takes the time to note the available sites. There are two areas, the upper and the lower campground. In the end, I choose site 40 in the lower area, more intimate, fewer neighbors, and… five deers on my site as we approach. I hope they’ll come back tomorrow morning.

3:30 PM – After setting up the team, I walk to Old Lunenburg and then head to Manson Beach on the other side of the bay to photograph the harbor. The light isn’t great… For the past three days, there’s been a persistent high-altitude fog that filters a lot of the sun. I can barely see my shadow. The sky is very gray-white. In the late afternoon, you can see a bit of blue in the sky.

Lunenburg, with its 2,400 inhabitants, is a VERY beautiful village! Really! The streets are very steep, which adds a lot to the picturesque aspect of the village. The streets are clean, and you can smell spring, the sea – and a very faint fishy scent in the air. A few tourists stroll around in this gentle (and surprising) autumn warmth. There are many shops and art galleries. I might take a look tomorrow.

To cross the main streets, a container with red flags is available for crossing with visibility. I didn’t try it… Do you have to « fly » it while crossing? You take the flag on one side and put it back in the container on the other side. Not a bad idea! 🤓 But… I pass an intersection where all the flags are on the other side… 🤔 What if they were for kids?? I think I’ll try it tomorrow… just to look ridiculous… It feels good sometimes!

The population has preserved the city’s identity over the centuries by safeguarding the wooden architecture of its homes and public buildings, some of which date back to the 18th century, reflecting the continuation of a vernacular architectural tradition. Its economy has always been based on fishing in the Atlantic, the future of which is now very uncertain.
